DRAFTING THE SUSTAINABILITY VISION FOR
UAE x COP28
CASE STUDY
What is the United Arab Emirates vision on Sustainability within its own country? How can we begin the groundwork for this ahead of hosting COP28?
THE MOMENT
Winter 2023: With just four days to prepare for a three-month position in Abu Dhabi, UAE, I seized an exceptional opportunity with SYPartners, joining their team as both production lead and senior design support. Despite demanding hours, this sustainability vision project delivered meaningful outcomes.
Phase 1 focused on comprehensive research with four external partners examining sustainability through historical, contemporary, and future-focused lenses. We conducted bi-weekly in-person meetings across Abu Dhabi locations and weekly sessions at the Salama Bint Hamdan al Nahyan Foundation (SHF). My responsibilities included UAE site scouting, design support, managing print and event production, and managing the digital assets (licensing and sourcing) for this SYPartners/SHF collaborative initiative.
In Phase 2, we synthesized our findings into a cohesive presentation under Creative Director Josh Nychuk's leadership, with my significant design direction contributions. I independently led a critical workstream: developing a comprehensive timeline tracking key UAE sustainability stakeholders from pre-1970s formation to present day.
Featured here are my design contributions, including original iconography representing the UAE's major sustainability initiatives and the timeline I creatively directed alongside Strategy Director Tanvi Malik.

Where did this
work end up?
Ultimately the groundwork of research that SYPartners created turned into an exhibition within the Calatrava building at the Expo Center in Dubai during the COP28 conference. Different iterations of teams from SYPartners rotated through the UAE to see the project through. As for my role, I was just in the beginnings deep in the research, strategy, and data.
