Pri Blan
(White Prices)
2012
When I first created this installation in the Tufts University Gallery, I didn’t have all the words, readings, and knowledge to be able to describe the feeling that I had and the visual outcome it produced.
Pri Blan is based on my volunteer disaster relief trip to Haiti after the earthquake of 2011. I felt at the time a lot of mixed feelings being there as a volunteer and then about Haiti. An island that set historical prescendence with it’s independence from colonization only to decades later still be tied to the same systems it tried to escape. It was like a self-cannibalization—trying to rebuild and build something while it slowly deteriorates in the middle of the gallery.
The piece began as a white cube in the middle of the gallery and through multiple performances—assisted with great help from Fabiola Menchelli—began to deteriorate throughout the exhibition.
